Three and easy, but Saints boss urges caution

- By Neil Robertson SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson was full of praise for his players after they secured their second win in a row against Dundee United.

However, the manager is certainly not getting carried away at this early stage of the season.

He said: “There are only four games gone. I said we will look at it after 10 games.

“We didn’t get too down when we lost the first two games. We’ll lose games and we have to not get too down. We won’t win every game but we have a game plan.

“As long as nobody plays as an individual, we need a 20-man squad to be successful.

“In three games we’ve allowed three shots on target. We’re a team that goes out not to be beat. We have forward players like we have and boys off the bench being solid is a No. 1 priority.”

Robinson added: “Performance-wise we were the same against Motherwell and last week so there’s consistency in performance.

“I thought we were very disciplined, allowed them to have the ball in areas that wouldn’t hurt us, Keanu Baccus and Mark O’Hara had the legs to spring us on then we took chances when they came.”

Robinson was also naturally delighted with the contribution of front men Curtis Main and Jonah Ayunga.

He said: “They are a handful up front. I have to also mention the three subs who came on.

“They showed the character and attitude of the players.

“To be successful you need that, you don’t need people moping about.

“They drive everything so special mention to them.

“As a group there are no egos and that has to remain.

“We feel we’ve found a shape that works for us.

“If I showed you our pre-game video it was very close to it but there are fine lines at this level. We took our chances when we needed to when we broke.

“Dundee United are a good side so to win 3-0 is a fantastic result.

“As a group there are no egos and that has to remain. We feel we’ve found a shape that works for us.”

United boss Jack Ross did not shy away from assessing his side’s performance.

He said: “It was really poor and way below the levels. It sound like I’m repeating myself.

“The manner of the goals sum up where we are.

We had the ball then we concede.

What we are producing as a collective is a long way short of what we need.

“It’s human nature – you have more doubts when you’re in difficult periods. But I’m loathe to use that as an excuse.”
