Rare early banknote sold

-

A rare one guinea banknote with red, black and blue print, issued in Edinburgh 245 years ago, has fetched £3,200 at auction.

The Royal Bank of Scotland note, dating back to September 1777, was the first in Scotland to feature more than two colours and is also thought to be the earliest tricolour note in Europe.

The note was bought by a Scottish collector and Andrew Pattison, of London auctioneers Noonans, said: “This is as much a historical document as it is a banknote.”
