Taylor and Catterall set to go again

- By Darren Johnstone sport@sundaypost.com

Josh Taylor looks set for a rematch against Jack Catterall in Glasgow on November 26.

The super-lightweight champion’s promoter, Bob Arum, has revealed that is the date they are working towards in a bid to get the two fighters back in the ring.

Taylor controversially retained all his four belts against Catterall on a split points decision at the OVO Hydro in February, despite widespread opinion that the judges got their scoring woefully wrong.

And even though Taylor had been keen to move up to welterweight, he is hanging around at 140lb in a bid to make amends for an unconvincing showing in the first fight.

Top Rank promoter Arum said: “I think it’s almost there. My legal staff are handling that and the last report I had was that everybody seems like they’re on board.

“It isn’t signed yet, but I’m reasonably optimistic that the fight will take place.

“I think the date is the last Saturday in November, the 26th, and I would like to see if we could do it in Scotland, where the last fight occurred.

“Taylor told us he was very disappointed with his performance in that fight, even though he felt he won and I thought he won. But it will be a good rematch as Catterall is a pretty good fighter.”

Taylor, however, will only go into the rematch with just the WBO title to his name after relinquishing control of the WBA, WBC and IBF belts due to his reluctance to honour mandatory bouts.

Taylor said: “Yes I vacated and I will continue to do whatever it takes to be in a position to make the rematch with Jack Catterall happen.

“Catterall is with promotional team BOXXER now and therefore it should be easy-peasy to make seeing as they work so closely with Top Rank.”

BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom added: “We’re very excited about Jack Catterall’s future.

“We know the fight that Josh Taylor wants and we’re working our best to make it happen.”
