Mackay is left waiting for a call after Sands controversy

- By Brian Fowlie

Referee controversy reared its head again yesterday.

Once more, Rangers were involved, only this time the headlines were about a player who should have been sent off, and not two who were.

It left Ross County boss, Malky Mackay, waiting for a phone call from referee Don Robertson last night.

The whistler’s decision not to send off Rangers defender James Sands had the Dingwall side’s manager tearing his hair out. It was 0-0 at Ibrox when Robertson made the call, and the game finished 4-0 to Rangers.

Mackay said: “Sands pulls down Jordy Hiwuala with two hands around his waist. He’d been booked but it’s inexplicable how it’s not a straight red, never mind a booking which would have seen him off.

“If they go down to 10 men, the dynamics of the game change. They took Sands off at half-time, which shows what they think.

“At the end of the game, I wondered if Don realised something isn’t quite right because he said if he got it wrong, he’d call me.”

Meanwhile, the man in the middle of all the controversy at Easter Road last Saturday, Willie Collum, had a quieter afternoon.

In charge of yesterday’s game between Queen’s Park and Cove Rangers, Collum issued just two bookings, and awarded the Spiders a penalty for hand-ball.

And everyone agreed it was the correct decision!
