Naturally, you’ll look amazing wearing no-make-up make-up
There’s no doubt, with heatwaves and plenty of sun, this season has been all about the no-make-up look. And true beauty pro Melanie Barrese, head make-up artist for Eyeko, tells us just how to master it.
“No-make-up make-up is a very pared-back natural beauty,” says Barrese.“This is about enhancing your natural beauty, as opposed to concealing and transforming your face, so you look like the very best version of yourself naturally.”
A fresh start
So why would we want to wear make-up but look like we’re not?
“There are a few reasons,” says the make-up artist. “Post-pandemic, people are using less make-up and focusing on great skin and skincare. Also, as we get older, you will generally find wearing loads of make-up just doesn’t look as flattering.
“This look is connected to looking and feeling fresher and more radiant. On a deeper level, it’s about accepting your face and skin for exactly what they are and celebrating this.”
Brush strokes
Perfecting it involves following a “less is more” approach. Barrese suggests first ensuring your skin is in the best condition. Then applying foundation and concealer – but only where it is needed.
“Key areas are the T-zone so, using a small concealer brush, apply concealer or foundation around your nostrils, on your chin and on any blemishes, areas of pigmentation and redness,” she says.“If you’re worried about dark circles, apply concealer on the inner corner of the eye only. By concentrating here you freshen the under eyes without loads of product.
“You can still use powder to help set and mattify skin, but just use a small eyeshadow brush to apply, so you’re more targeted with your application.
“Bronzers and blushers are great for this look, as they give skin a healthy look. Use them lightly and in places where you natural tan or blush. When it comes to eyes, I recommend using a lash curler to open the eyes and then apply a very light coating of mascara. Brows should be kept as natural as possible by combing through them so they look tidy. Use a little brow colour where your brows may be sparse. Lips – just add a dab of balm.”
Well toned
Stick with colours in your skin tone – and make sure you have the right tools.
“Stay away from big brushes or sponges and, instead, use fingers or eyeshadow brushes that will allow you to get a more precise application just where you need it,” says Barrese.
“I also love cream formulas, they tend to be moisturising, sit naturally on the skin, as well as give a healthy radiance.” eyeko.co.uk
