House parties
Home in on a break with a difference. Check out these stunning properties for hire
Mar Lodge Estate, near Braemar
There are several remarkable properties in the NTS-run, 72,000-acre estate 15km from Braemar. Classic scenery on the upper waters of the Dee. Apartments in main mansion (take 4-15) and two other houses. Library, billiard room; ballroom can be hired separately. Expensive, but not when divided between mates. And big wow factor. Live like the royals down the road, without the servants (unless you bring with). Somewhat dated interiors, otherwise, it’s all sorted!
Inshriach House, near Aviemore
On B970 back road between Inverdruie and Feshiebridge. Atmospheric, comfy Edwardian country house with lived-in boho public rooms, highly individual bedrooms, gardens and small estate. Close to spectacular Loch an Eilean. Self-catering or food from the Old
Bridge Inn nearby. Up to 17 can stay and there is fabulous eco-accom in the grounds. One of the most laid-back options. They have fishing and red squirrels. Walter is a fine host (he may ply you with his limited edition gins).
Doonbrae House, Alloway
In heart of unspoiled, well-kept village still evocative of Burns, whose birthplace, gardens and Tam o’ Shanter graveyard are nearby. Opposite and part of Brig o’ Doon Hotel, much favoured for weddings. This refurbished mansion is separate and you have it to yourself (group bookings only). Also two cottages. On Doon banks (to amble) in delightful gardens. Self-catering or eat at hotel. Five suites.
Saddell Castle, near Campbeltown
According to mates, this castle and adjacent properties are “marvellous”. A drive from Glasgow/Edinburgh to the east coast of the peninsula, nine miles north of Campbeltown, there’s a great beach looking over to Arran and a real sense of being away from it all. Very good golf at Machrihanish 12 miles south-west. Castle sleeps eight.
