Actress Keeley Hawes says she she cares less about what people think of her as she gets older.

The 46-year-old star of Line of Duty and Bodyguard says she has become more confident in her 40s. She said: “One thing, if I could tell my younger self, is everything seems so important but it’s not. Give yourself a break.”

Hawes has starred in a series of acclaimed TV dramas and will soon lead a new three-part BBC thriller, Crossfire, playing a mother whose holiday in the Canary Islands descends into chaos following a shooting.

The actress, a mother of three, said she used to worry about other people’s opinions of her and how a quote in an interview might change perceptions of her. “Now, I’m like, I don’t care,” she said. “I mean, I do, but I care less. It’s a good place to be. You start thinking: ‘Well, what next?’ This is the second act and it should be really exciting.”

Hawes, who is married to Succession star Matthew Macfadyen, added that Crossfire was the toughest shoot of her successful career. She said: “Just the weight of that horrible gun. It’s like picking up a weight in the morning and running around with it all day long, in the heat.”
