Whole latte love at cafe where kindness counts

-

Jenny runs a café. She also has a daughter, Iona, with special educational needs.

When she took the teenager on as a waitress over the summer, Jenny admits she was nervous and kept a watchful eye on her.

When Iona approached a customer, known to be tricky, Jenny listened in.

The customer gave his order. When Iona hesitated, with her pen over her pad, he said, “What?”, too brusquely Jenny thought. Iona looked at him and said, “I can’t spell that.”

There was a moment of silence, when Jenny prepared to step in. But the customer raised the menu, pointed to his order and, gently, spelled it out. Then he added, “I was hopeless at school, and nobody helped. I hope you get all the help you need.”

Needless to say, that customer is now one of Jenny’s – and Iona’s – favourites!
