1965 FROZEN IN TIME

-

Despite their recent revival, only the most-optimistic Manchester United fans fancy their side to be crowned champions this season.

It was a different story 57 years ago when Arsenal visited Old Trafford, as they will do today.

Back in 1965, the Red Devils were involved in a titanic tussle with Leeds United for the title, and knew a win over the Gunners would keep them on course for the crown.

A Denis Law double, added to by a George Best goal, gave them a 3-1 win in front of a Monday night crowd of 51,625.

That put “The Lawman” on 28 league goals for the season, but he missed out on top spot to Blackburn Rovers’ Andy McEvoy, and Jimmy Greaves of Spurs.

The same night, Don Revie’s side were being held to a 3-3 draw by 10-man Birmingham City.

Those results put the clubs level on 61 points. And although United lost their final game 2-1 at Aston Villa, they became champions on goal average.

The same season, that system saw Kilmarnock pip Hearts to become Scottish champions.
