She was our Queen but their mum

-

I don’t know why but when I heard about the Queen’s death, I immediately thought of the wonderful, happy pictures of William and Kate’s children going off to school we had seen just that morning. The thought of those happy wee children not seeing their gran again made me awfully sad.

She was an amazing woman but sometimes in all the tributes from presidents and prime ministers, it is easy to forget she was also a mum and a gran. I suppose they’re used to it but I can’t imagine dealing with the loss of a loved one in public like that, and I thought Prince Charles’ speech was very dignified and moving.

Whatever you think about the monarchy, any decent-minded person will wish them all well at such a sad time.

Just one more? No

The roadworks are grim but the delays wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the men, and they’re nearly always men, who try to squeeze through the lights and end up blocking the junction for everyone and just sit staring straight ahead to avoid seeing the chaos they’re causing. That bunch completely rip my knitting. Gillian Smart, by email

From bad to grisly

I think we should have been careful what we wish for. However bad Boris Johnson was, and he was rotten, Liz Truss could be even worse. Anyone that thinks Jacob Rees-Mogg is a serious politician needs a lie down and, looking at the rest of her cabinet, there is not one I would trust to put a shilling in the meter. Although you would need a lot more than a shilling these days. Margaret Wright, Ayr
