Aftermath of stadium tragedy

-

The front page featured an ominous image of the crush barrier, twisted and mangled in the chaos in 1961.

“This was the scene of yesterday’s calamity at Ibrox,” read The Post front page caption. “Photo shows the broken handrail and broken fencing (on right). A lone policeman guards the exit.”

These stairs were a deadly bottle that were to cause the Ibrox disaster in 1971.

It was because of the events of January 1971 that Ibrox was rebuilt, with three-quarters of the ground being replaced by modern all-seater stands, and the stadium converted to a 44,000-capacity ground by 1981.
