Ibrox survivor: I couldn’t breathe... I was convinced I was dying

-

The Post front page detailed the horror of the Ibrox tragedy with chilling eyewitness testimony.

“The two men killed were George Nelson, and Thomas Thomson,” it read.

“A graphic account of the accident last night by 28-year-old Gilbert Young, one of the injured. ‘We were all moving in a solid mass when suddenly I felt the pressure.

Two chaps just in front disappeared underfoot. I realised something terrible was going to happen. No matter how I tried to keep standing I was forced down. We realised more and more were falling on top of us.

A man next to me kept saying I am dying. I struggled to breathe, but gradually I found it was becoming impossible. I was convinced that I was dying, too.

Then I lost consciousness. I was sitting on the terracing when I recovered. I was bruised all over and couldn’t stand. I can’t tell how lucky I feel to have escaped alive.’”
