FROZEN IN TIME

-

Napoli, who visit Ibrox on Tuesday, don’t have happy memories of their only previous trip to Scotland on European duty.

Back in November, 1967, they travelled to Edinburgh for a Fairs Cup return leg with a 4-1 advantage in their excess baggage.

And with legendary Italian keeper, Dino Zoff, between the sticks, what could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a lot, actually.

On one of the most-famous nights in Hibs’ history, Napoli were bundled out of the competition by a five-goal salvo from their hosts.

Bobby Duncan scored to get the ball rolling after just five minutes, and when Pat Quinn scored the Hibees’ 50th goal in Europe on half-time, the miracle was on.

Peter Cormack’s header levelled the tie on 67 minutes, and was quickly followed by Pat Stanton scoring the fourth.

After Antonio Girardo had been sent off, Colin Stein – who had scored in the first leg – did so again 11 minutes from time for a famous 5-0 win.
