Easy-breezy ways to protect skin from the autumn chill challenge

Aside from losing the skin’s natural summer glow, colder temperatures, exposure to the elements and dry central heating can leave skin feeling and looking dehydrated.

Taking care of your skin during autumn and winter doesn’t necessarily mean “more work” but changing your product routine is important as skin requires an increase in hydration to maintain its protective barrier.

Hannah Pearce, from Urban Retreat, shares her top tips for keeping skin healthy and hydrated in colder times.

Switch up your cleanser

“Double cleansing is the backbone of any skincare routine, not only for the cleansing benefits, but it can do wonders for hydration levels too,” says Pearce.

“Using a cleansing balm massaged into the skin first will help break down any make-up and SPF residue whilst increasing blood flow.

“Follow with a gentle, lightweight cleanser like a micellar lotion which will actually cleanse the pores once make-up, SPF and pollution has been washed away.”

Slip in a serum

Applying a serum can really help skin in winter.

Pearce explains: “Choosing a serum can be daunting as there are so many on the market.

“However, go for one formulated with Hyaluronic Acid for the ultimate hydration and skin-plumping boost and skincare superstar Vitamin C to boost antioxidants and fight against free radicals to reveal a brightened and silky-smooth complexion.”

It’s all in the eyes

As the temperatures drop and our skin begins to struggle, the eyes are always the first to show it.

“The eye contour is a thinner, more fragile skin that can react quickly to colder weather, blasting heating and prolonged exposure to artificial lighting, leading to eyes that feel dry, with rapidly appearing lines and circles as dark as your evening commute home,” adds Pearce.

“Now’s the time to invest

in a soothing eye cream that replenishes and re-hydrates the eye contour whilst significantly reducing signs of fatigue.”

Masking it

A weekly hydrating face mask delivers an abundance of vitamins, nutrients and moisture that will soak deep into your skin, according to Pearce. Choose a gel or creamy formulation depending on skin type which will inject hydration deep into the skin.

Always exfoliate before so that you get the best out of your mask and also ensuring your other skincare products work effectively.
