The Cosy Cafe

81 South Bridge Street, Airdrie Our undercover cafe critic rates the bakes

There’s no better way to spend a morning than sipping on a nice, hot coffee while you watch the world go by.

Taking an hour to myself every so often, escaping the busyness of life is a ritual I started a while ago and try to remember to keep up.

Whether its a walk round the park or a long lunch, it’s important to take some “me” time and it feels a million times better on those occasions it comes with a scone on the side, of course.

Today, I’m treating myself to a well-earned break at The Cosy Cafe in Airdrie, a cute little greasy spoon which I’m told does a great breakfast.

It certainly is cosy – and busy.

It’s a Monday morning and I’m lucky to spot an empty table at the back.

With brick-look walls, faux greenery, black and white pictures lining the walls and old-style lights that look like they’ve been made out of cinema film reels, it’s pretty cute and welcoming, a nice place to pull up a pew.

Browsing the menu takes a good few minutes – largely because there’s so much to choose from.

From breakfasts and burgers to soups and sandwiches, I find myself spoilt for choice, but eventually decide on the Cosy Breakfast, with steak sausage, bacon, fried egg, potato scone, beans, black pudding and toast.

When the smiling waiter brings it to the table, I wonder if I’ll get through it all. It’s like breakfast, lunch and dinner all rolled into one.

But it’s so delicious I don’t want to leave a drop, so I struggle on. Washed down with a hot latte, it definitely hits the spot.

For afters, the cakes look too good to be true. I would take a slice of the Milky Way or Kit Kat cheesecakes in a heartbeat.

But when I hear homemade plain and fruit scones are baked freshly in the cafe every morning, there’s no question I will be trying one.

Served warm with butter and jam, this scone, firm on the outside with a soft interior, is sublime.

It’s the perfect end to my little bit of “me” time.

In fact, I think I’ll need to have much more of it from now on!
