Created by African composer and playwright Neo Vilakazi, who lives in Scotland, Shona The Musical aims to be the next big African musical to hit West End and Broadway stages.

Shona, as Scottish a name as you’ll find, is also a tribal name in Vilakazi’s homeland, Zimbabwe.The music and narrative of the show is based on the fictional journey of a young African man sent to Edinburgh for education, where he meets and marries a local woman, but it is also based on real events and the socio-political turmoil of Robert Mugabe’s rule of Zimbabwe.

The production features white and black performers, and blends their voices together in harmonies akin to The Lion King, Graceland or Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
