The action picks up in the spring of 1939, three months after the previous series ended - which means that the Second World War is looming. However, in the first episode, James has his own troubles to deal with as Siegfried decides to remind him about his responsibilities as a vet, just as he’s preparing to go on honeymoon with Helen.

It leaves James feeling torn between his personal and professional lives, a dilemma that is going to intensify when he finds himself on a farm in the Dales, carrying out tests on cows on his wedding day.
