Ali vowsWarriors will fight back from Italian woe

- By Stuart Bathgate sport@sundaypost.com

Ali Price believes that Glasgow are on the right track under new head coach, Franco Smith, despite their dismal display against Benetton on Friday night.

The Warriors lost 33-11 in Treviso in their first game of the new URC season, and offered no more than the odd glimpse of the attractive attacking style that they used to show in every match.

Their only points came from a Zander Fagerson try, and two George Horne penalties.

But scrum-half Price, who came off the bench in the second half, is confident that they will get back to their best once Smith’s ideas have had time to bed in.

“We have to keep trusting in the process that Franco has brought in, and keep working hard,” said the Scotland international.

“It’s a long year. I know everyone will say that, and the scoreline and result is disappointing for us, but there’s a long way to go.

“We all know the talent, the ability and the work-rate that we’ve got in the changing room. It’s about finding that, digging deep and sticking together.

“We know where we want to get to, that’s the big thing. We’re not there yet, but we are working hard and we’re a motivated group.

“It might take another couple of weeks, not to get a result necessarily but to get the performance we’re after. And that will bring the results.

“It’s frustrating and disappointing, but it’s the start of the journey for us. We’re excited and motivated, even though we were disappointed.”

Glasgow had been due to play Worcester and Ulster in pre-season, but in the end only had an outing against the Ayrshire Bulls of Super6.

Price, who is likely to start in Friday’s home game against Cardiff, admitted that might have been part of the reason why his team looked a bit rusty, but insisted they would not use that as an excuse.

“We would have liked to have had more of a go leading into this game,” he said. “That wasn’t the case. It would be easy to use that as an excuse and we’re not about that.

“We need to be better – and we will get better. The framework is there.

“This isn’t the start we wanted, not at all. But the motivation is there to come back and improve from Monday.”
