You can, but there’s no guarantee that they will come up the same colour. However, you may find yourself with some new, exciting shades.

I’ve tried to move lily of the valley from an establishe­d clump to elsewhere in my garden, but they never take. Why not? – Ken Smith, by email

Lily of the valley like moist soil and a bit of shade. If you have tried to move them in spring they may have dried out, so try moving some now, before they die down.

Can I use weedkiller to get rid of couch grass growing among phormium in a pot? – Gary Bruce, by email

You can, if you paint it on to the grass stems very carefully, but a better solution would be to tip the phormium out of the pot, wash off all the compost and untangle the weeds from the roots.
