Family pays tribute to climber in fatal fall

-

Family and friends of a man who fell to his death while climbing with a group in the northwest Highlands have paid tribute to the father-of-one.

Lachlan Macdonald, 46, fell from the Forcan ridge of The Saddle in Glen Shiel on Saturday September 17.

The bus driver who lived in Blantyre was originally from Benbecula and was an experienced hillwalker. He was at the end of a line of 13 climbers when he lost his footing and fell backwards down the hill.

His mother, Margaret Macdonald, said: “He was doing what he loved best, climbing the mountains. We just can’t believe what has happened to our gorgeous boy. He was an amazing dad to Alannah, brother to Karen, uncle to wee Calum and son to Calum and myself and words can’t express how we feel.”

Lachlan’s friend Alasdair Campbell, 47, from Benbecula, has set up an online fundraiser for the family. He said: “This has come as a massive shock to everyone who knew Lachlan, He was a larger than life character who loved company and loved his family. He was always up for a laugh and he was the life and soul of parties.

He had been hillwalking for a couple of years and had a good network of friends and was quite experienced. He was a big supporter of Hearts and would always wear a Jam Tarts top on the hills.
