Hunt for assassin as plot to kill visiting Soviet leader exposed
“New York police stated they had received a report through the State Department that an attempt was to be made to assassinate Mr Khrushchev,” reported The Post. “The report was that a former Hungarian freedom fighter was on his way from Philadelphia to attempt to assassinate the Soviet premier, and Hungarian
Communist leader Janos Kadar. The man planned to go to New York today.”
Fortunately for Khrushchev, he did not suffer the fate of previous Soviet Premiers by being assassinated on his visit to America. However, he was later deposed and lived in a Moscow apartment until his death in 1971.
