1973 FROZEN IN TIME

-

Graham Potter will be hoping his first league match in charge of Chelsea will end as well as Malcolm Allison’s bow when the Blues visit Selhurst Park on Saturday.

On March 31, 1973, “Big Mal” took charge of Crystal Palace for the first time, and the flamboyant boss engineered his side’s first win over Chelsea in 34 attempts.

That victory came thanks to goals from his Scottish contingent, Iain Phillip and Jim Cannon.

Phillip, a £95,000 buy from Dundee, was in his only season with Palace before returning to Dens Park, and his only goal for the club on the half-hour put the hosts ahead.

Ten minutes into the second half, Cannon, booked after 10 minutes for roughing up Peter Osgood, headed home to make it a goal-scoring debut.

The big Glaswegian would go on to make a record 660 appearances for Palace over the next 15 years.

Phillip crossed the road to Dundee United in 1978, where he earned two League Cup medals to add to the one he won with Dundee in 1973.
