I know how cyclists can be at risk and have bruises to prove it

-

Tour de France winner Chris Froome was knocked off his bike when someone opened their car door as he rode past on a ride in Monaco. He shredded his elbow in the accident and is imploring drivers to use the Dutch reach to open their doors, which means using your opposite hand to open the door, which forces you to turn around and see what may be behind you.

The same thing happened to me years ago while cycling round Edinburgh. I was thrown into the middle of the road and very nearly run over by a van. The driver showed absolutely no

remorse and indeed seemed to be angry I’d got in his way. Looking back, I’m furious at myself for not reporting him to the police.

That put me off riding my bike for a long time and I’ve only recently started using it again.

But last week I witnessed two accidents with cyclists being knocked off their bikes by careless drivers.

I hasten to add that cyclists, of course, are sometimes to blame, the fault is not always with the motorist. But Edinburgh’s bike routes have a long way to go before I’ll feel properly safe on two wheels.
