1955 FROZEN IN TIME

-

Debate over the SPFL’s new TV deal with SKY has been reverberating over the past few days.

Things were so much simpler 67 years ago when the first-ever live game was beamed into Scottish households.

The SFA announced the 1955 Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Clyde would be beamed live, providing 80% of the match tickets were sold a fortnight before the game.

A crowd of 106,234 avoided their living rooms to see the Hoops take a first-half lead through Jimmy Walsh.

That’s how things stood in a poor contest until two minutes from time when the Bully Wee’s Archie Robertson scored direct from a corner.

Four days later, 68,831 turned out to see Tommy Ring score the goal that took the Cup to Shawfield for only the second time.

Of course, there was no VAR back then, which wasn’t an issue. After all, taking charge in his final game was referee, Charlie Faultless!
