What are warning signs for high blood pressure?

-

High blood pressure, or hypertension, can develop slowly with no signs or symptoms, so it’s important to get it checked regularly. High blood pressure increases the risk of atherosclerosis, which causes heart disease and strokes. All healthy adults over 40 should have their blood pressure checked every five years. If you have an underlying condition, like diabetes, get checked at least once a year. The same goes for anyone on medication that can increase blood pressure, such as the contraceptive pill, steroids or antiinflammatory medication. A home testing machines is useful in making a diagnosis because we require several readings. However, the machine must be accurate so look at those recommended by the British Hypertension Society. Test every so often, be relaxed when testing and don’t panic over one high reading just repeat it. If your blood pressure stays above 180/110 you should contact your GP and if you have any new symptoms such as blurred vision or headache at the same time then see them straight away.
