Big polluters need to make big changes

£25 STAR LETTER

-

I can understand why there are calls for those who can afford it to pay more tax to help cut emissions ( The Sunday Post, last week) but the big companies and multinationals need to change first.

All of us sorting our paper from glass or paying more tax might make us think we’re helping, but it’s the tiniest drop in a gigantic ocean. We’re not the big polluters and nothing very much seems to be happening to tackle them. I know the war in Ukraine has changed everything, but even before, all the big promises at Cop26 were on track to change precisely nothing.

A year on, the same circus is gathering at the same vast cost in Egypt and will almost certainly achieve precisely the same.

What a nightmare

Liz Truss was getting all the attention but Home Secretary Suella Braverman was a standout at the Tory party conference.

The Labour Party are spoilt for choice for material but that clip of her saying her big political dream was to see a plane full of refugees take off for Rwanda before Christmas should be played on a loop before the elections. It has been compared to Martin Luther King’s dream of freedom and equality, but not favourably.

Such a stupid, horrible thing to say. It sums her up. And, for now anyway, it sums up her party. Robert Shaw, Kirkcaldy

Hen’s a stand up guy

I enjoyed The Broons last week with Hen trying his hand at stand-up.

He shouldn’t give up his day job but could get a gig on some of those panel shows. I’ve had earaches funnier than Have I Got News For You.

Incredible Elena

Not being a tennis guru I was unaware that Elena Baltacha was, in fact, Scottish. I watched a programme on BBC Alba telling the story of her too-short life. It was a wonderful tale about her determination and also very moving. What an incredible girl.

I do hope the programme is shown again and given a little bit more publicity.

Wheel shocker

Nice of Rona Dougall to acknowledge that cyclists are sometimes to blame for accidents.

Just goes to show there is a first time for everything. Dave Appleby, Newcastle

Surely some misteak

What’s going on with The Great British Bake Off? On Mexican night they were all cooking steak for their tacos. What’s that all about? It was more like MasterChef.

Still worth watching, though, to see Paul Hollywood fall in love with himself a little more every episode. Sandra Crowther, Glasgow

Toot sweet?

Do you still get Tooty Frooties? I loved them. I also loved a Sherbert Dip and a Bazooka Joe but hated a Strawberry Bon Bon.

I still love a Jelly Baby and don’t mind a Jelly Tot when I see them Oh, and a Jelly Snake, too. Georgia Samwells, Dundee
