Florence Nightingal­e with a staff of 38 nurses was sent to the Crimean War to care for wounded British soldiers.

The military hospital was in an appalling state. Soldiers were dying in awful conditions and were 10 times more at risk of dying of diseases like cholera or typhoid rather than their wounds.
