There’s always a lot to learn when starting a new job. But, among all the new programmes and practices for her job, Helen was surprised to see her employers take seriously the Swedish practice of “fika”.

-

At first, she thought it was just a fancy name for a tea-break. After all, tea or coffee would be drunk, perhaps with a biscuit or a cake. But, it’s more than that.

For true fika, refreshments should be taken with a colleague, or a friend, and some time to chat should be included.

It seems that companies around the world are waking up to the fact that time spent bonding actually works out better for the employees and the company.

If even big business is getting around to putting relationships first, why shouldn’t we?

Call it “fika” or a cuppa and a natter, but treat yourself to time with a friend today.
