’Well aim to pile more woe on the wounded Gers

- By Danny Stewart

Brian Kerr promises Motherwell will this do their best to pile on the misery for Rangers when they visit Lanarkshire this afternoon.

Level with Liverpool at half-time of the clubs’ Champions League clash last Wednesday, the Light Blues ended the night on the wrong end of a 7-1 thrashing.

It was their heaviest home defeat in Europe and the disappointment was compounded by the potentially major injury suffered by Connor Goldson.

Today it is back to Premiership action with the card seeing them up against a side who twice held them to draws last season.

“It’s up to us to do something,” said Kerr, No. 2 to Motherwell manager Steven Hammill.

“We know it’s going to be a tough one, but another challenge that we are going to thrive on.

“They have to come to Fir Park now and we feel it’s going to give us a better opportunity.

“It was a big game they had in midweek and hopefully it has tired them out a wee bit.

“There is only so much we can take from it because Liverpool are a different animal to us at the minute.

“We will take bits out, of course. But we will have a game plan prepared not just on the Liverpool match but also on how they have played over the previous weeks.”

While not prepared to divulge strategy, Kerr admitted Motherwell would look to get on the front foot as much as possible.

“We would like to get our shooting boots on in this one,” he said.

“We feel we are in a good place. We have had really good performances, but we have been shy in front of goal at times, apart from Ross County the other night.

“Our performance at Celtic Park was good, now we’d like to see how we fare against one of the Old Firm teams here.

“Hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.”

Fittingly, given Hammill was a tenacious defender in his playing days, the reshaping of Motherwell under the new coaching team has included a tightening up at the back.

Only the top three teams – Celtic, Rangers and Hibs – had conceded fewer goals heading into this weekend’s card.

“The manger has covered all bases for us as you would expect, coming in and putting his stamp on things,” said centreback Ricki Lamie.

“He has highlighted certain things we need to work on and we’ve done that but we need to do it more consistently. Setpieces being one of them.

“The goal we lost against Hibs last week, although it has deflected and looped up and was a good finish, it was still a ball into the box.

“Things like that we need to brush up on and he’s highlighted that as well as other things.

“For the most part, we have done it but there are still games where we feel we should not have lost the goals we did.”
