Wotherspoon return boosts Saints gaffer

- By Darren Johnstone SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Saints manager Callum Davidson admits he was delighted to see David Wotherspoon back on the pitch after 11 months out with an ACL injury.

The midfielder replaced Drey Wright in the dying stages of the 1-0 loss at Livingston following a long journey back to fitness.

And, although the former Hibs playmaker could not influence the outcome at the Tony Macaroni Arena, the sight of Wotherspoon, who will be eyeing a World Cup spot with Canada, coming on was a welcome sight.

Davidson said: “It’s good to see David back on the pitch. “It’s been a long time, and he shows a bit of composure and class.

“He still has a long way to recover but it’s great to see him back on the pitch.

“For David, it’s about getting back in the team. It’s been a long time.”

After starting brightly, the game got away from Saints. Stevie May wasted a great early chance before James Brown’s shot came back off the bar.

The Perth outfit are now only just one point clear of a trio of teams propping up the Premiership.

Davidson added: “In the first half, when you come here it’s always a tough game, but we had chances.

“The first goal is always crucial against Livingston and they get it with a deflection. We had missed a couple of good chances before that.

“Then we lost our way in the second half for 15 or 20 minutes. It wasn’t until the last 20 minutes when we started to apply a bit of pressure.

“By that time, it is tough to chase the game.

“I have no idea (why the game got away from us). You come here and it’s a difficult place to come.

“Livi make it difficult; they can just shut up shop. The first goal is always important here.”

Davidson, who admitted Nicky Clark missed out due to his partner going into labour, said he was unsure whether Brown’s shot off the underside of the bar had crossed the line.

He added: “I don’t know. It’s one of those ones but we had other chances as well.

“I want us to be a little bit more positive and ask questions of their defence. We didn’t do that.”
