Rail strike misery for travellers

-

Rail passengers faced fresh travel misery yesterday because of a strike that hit services on some of the busiest routes in the country.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) on Avanti West Coast walked out for 24 hours in a row over rosters.

The firm was able to run just one train an hour between Euston and Glasgow, with no service to Edinburgh.

The first train of the day left Euston just before 7.30am and the last train of the day from Euston departed mid-afternoon.

The company had advised passengers to check before they travel, warning of the reduced timetable.

Meanwhile, ScotRail bosses are urging rugby fans heading to Scotland’s first autumn international on Saturday to avoid using the train, as the operator warned further strike action by members of the RMT union will see significant disruption.

It will be able to run services on just three routes – the day that Scotland take on Australia at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium.
