Cup final is marred by football yobs

-

“Hundreds of Rangers fans charged the victorious Celtic team at the end of yesterday’s League Cup final at Hampden,” read The Post after Celtic won the League Cup final 2-1 over their old rivals.

“When Celtic formed up to go and receive the trophy, bottle-throwing broke out on the west terracing, traditionally the Rangers’ end. Police dived into the crowd and running battles took place. Further trouble flared when Celtic emerged on to the field with the trophy. Hundreds of bluescarved fans swarmed over the barrier – many of them to escape the flying bottles. Soon they surrounded Celtic players, who were making a desperate bid to get back to the safety of the dressing-rooms.”

The trouble followed on from the previous year, when 20 people ended up in hospital after Rangers beat Celtic in the same fixture to lift the cup.
