No case for the defence after Buddies defeat

- By Euan Mcarthur SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Despondent Dundee United gaffer Liam Fox watched his side slump to defeat – then warned they must learn their harsh lessons quickly.

The Tangerines remain secondbottom of the table having gone down to St Mirren just days after losing in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final 2-1 to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Fox admitted defensive frailties cost them dear and the Tannadice gaffer insisted they must stop giving opposition sides a helping hand along the way.

Fox said: “We’ve come away with no points and we’re hugely disappointed about that.

“There are aspects of our game that I thought were quite good but there are things we need to get better at – and need to get better at quickly.

“We need to stop crosses coming into the box and we need to make better decisions, especially when we are on top in games.

“We’ve conceded a couple of goals when we are on top in games and there is plenty for us to look at structurally, and individually.

“This job is never going to be easy but we have a full week’s training before Motherwell and we’ll get back to work.”

Fox was heartened by the instant impact of experienced front man Steven Fletcher and hopes he can play a leading role in the weeks ahead.

He added: “Steven’s been training well throughout this week and he’s a massive influence in our changing room; a top player.

“When he came on today there was a reaction. He got his goal and it’s a positive to have him back.

“We took Tony Watt off. It’s just a wee issue with Tony’s back.

“And Dylan Levitt hurt his knee on Thursday night.

“But it’s nothing too serious and hopefully he’ll be back for next week.”

Fox admitted the introduction of VAR will take a bit of getting used to but wasn’t drawn too much on the new technology.

He added: “It’s the first time we’ve had an experience of that so it was a wee bit strange. You obviously think that you’ve had a wee bit of luck, albeit the VAR turned it over because there was a foul.”
