Garden of the week
Abbotsford near Melrose was the home of Sir Walter Scott, who was passionate about trees and who helped to plant hundreds of acres of woodland around his estate.
Today visitors can stroll in “Walter’s Woods” and take in the autumn colours along the banks of the River Tweed. The gardens next to the house were also designed by the writer to reflect the Regency style and they remain as he envisaged them, with just a few alterations made by members of Scott’s family, who remained living in the house until 2007.
