A promotion poser as Spiders ready for their Hampdenreturn
Queen’s Park are to make a surprise return to Hampden Park.
In what will be seen as a potential prelude for their plans should they win promotion to the Premiership, the Spiders have struck a deal with the SFA to play a game at their ancestral home.
They will host Montrose in the clubs’ Challenge Cup Fourth Round tie on December 10.
Queen’s sold Hampden to the Association for £5-million in 2020, with plans to play at Lesser Hampden next door.
However, with the club having since embarked a major renovation programme at the latter ground, they have been playing their home games at Ochilview in Stenhousemuir.
They had hoped to have the work completed in time to allow them to host games from next month. But delays have meant that is now instead set to happen in the New Year.
The National Stadium is due to host the Premier Sport Cup semi-finals early in January.
The agreement points up the possibility of a longer-term deal, should the Spiders manage to win promotion.
That would present a logistical problem, as Lesser Hampden will only have a 1,700 capacity, in its first stage, and games against the Old Firm would attract crowds in excess of 30,000.
