Cairndale Hotel Our undercover cafe critic rates the bakes

English Street, Dumfries

-

It’s always a secret mission of mine to find a quiet haven in the midst of a busy, bustling city.

Somewhere tranquil where you can just be alone with your thoughts and favourite people – and a scrumptious scone, of course!

And today I stumble upon one unexpectedly at the Cairndale Hotel in the centre of Dumfries.

The hotel itself is a grand red sandstone house, but it’s the Secret Garden that catches my eye.

Out front, tucked in behind the bushes, there’s a couple of transparent domes. They look like huge footballs – or miniature versions of the Epcot. The owners installed these so they could still host tables during the socially distanced days of the pandemic.

But they proved so popular they decided to keep the luxurious little private pods for afternoon teas and parties.

And, I must say, it was a good move. Stepping inside, there’s a“grass”carpet and a table all set for four, with a special Halloween theme.

Pumpkin trick-ortreat bags spilling with sweeties have been left for the little companions I brought along for the ride today, and the dome has been decked out with decorations, twinkling lights and spooky music to create a fantastic fun experience.

Before long, afternoon tea arrives, a birdcage full of savoury and sweet treats from salmon sandwiches to teacups filled with Eton Mess.

Everything has been home-made by the resident chef and tastes delicious. The Victoria sponge and salted caramel brownies go down a treat.

But, of course, it’s the scone I savour most. There’s both fruit and plain. I sample a bit of each. Smothered with clotted cream and jam, they are simply sublime. Perfectly firm on the outside, and bursting with fluffiness and flavour within.

After a pot of coffee and glass of fizz to wash it all down,

I feel as full as a puggy. If only this dome could roll and take me home...

I certainly feel like I’ve had a few hours off from the world – and this is definitely one little secret I’m more than happy to share.
