Firefighters battle to control city-centre blaze
Police sealed off city streets as firefighters battled to bring a major blaze under control in Dundee last night.
The fire took hold quickly in an empty building, the former Robertson’s furniture shop, in Barrack Street, near the Overgate shopping centre, just after 6pm.
Plans emerged recently to demolish the building for student accommodation but the façade was due to be saved. However, the blaze gutted the building, with witnesses saying flames could be seen for miles. One said: “The fire just ripped through it, and within 20 minutes, the building was reduced to almost a shell.”
