THE BIG QUESTIONS

-

I’ve just been told I look like a caveman because I haven’t shaved for a few days. Begs the question – did cavemen shave? – B

Early humans that we may regard as cavemen were around in the Paleolithic Era (roughly 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 BC).

As steel wasn’t invented until 13,000 BC, to prevent mites and other insects from forming nests and laying eggs, they would scrape their hair off with sharpened rocks or seashells. Ouch!

I can’t recall his name, but wasn’t there a comedian who used to appear with a double bass? – R

That’s Jim Tavare, who still performs stand-up comedy with his giant double bass, which he calls “Bassie”.

He co-wrote and appeared in The Sketch Show with Lee Mack and Tim Vine (2001-04).

The rather morose comic was almost killed in a car crash in LA in 2017, he returned with a show about the year he spent recovering in US and UK hospitals, titled From Deadpan To Bedpan.

He has also acted, and made a memorable appearance as landlord of The Leaky Cauldron in Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone.

Which came first, Pepsi, Coke or our other national drink, Irn-Bru? – C

Coca-Cola wins this particular battle, having been invented in 1886 by a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr John S Pemberton.

Pepsi-Cola came along a dozen years later when Caleb Bradham, also a pharmacist, in North Carolina, tried to come up with a healthy soft drink.

That makes Irn-Bru the youngster, having only been around since 1901.
