Manhunt for escaped prisoner

-

“Bloodhounds were still trying up till dark to track down Albert Edward Doick (22), who escaped from a constable at Ford Junction yesterday when being escorted to Portsmouth Gaol,” reported The Post.

“Despite a wide search of the Sussex Downs by almost the entire West Sussex police force, assisted by the dogs, Doick has got clear away, and so far there is no clue as to his whereabouts. Doick was sentenced to four months’ hard labour for bicycle theft, and when being taken from Horsham to Portsmouth under a police guard he had to change trains at Ford Junction.

“When the train stopped, the policeman unlocked the handcuffs by which Doick was fastened to him. As he did so Doick slipped off his overcoat, threw it over the policeman’s head, and then dashed out of the carriage, and ran in the direction of Worthing.”
