Blanchett: Women have made progress but powerful men won’t let go
Actress Cate Blanchett believes there has been progress for women since her career began three decades ago.
However, the 53-year-old Australian, best known for Oscar-winning turns in Blue Jasmine and The Aviator, said greater women’s representation remains a struggle.
“I think women feel much more mobilised,” she said.
“My generation was brought up by another generation of women, a lot of whom felt the backlash for calling themselves feminists, and so were worried about their daughters being proactive.
“I am positive that changes are happening – but the people who are holding on to power do not want to let go.”
Blanchett, who has three sons and a daughter with husband Andrew Upton, also spoke of her fears over climate change.
She co-hosts a podcast, Climate Of Change, for which she has interviewed the Prince of Wales and former Irish president Mary Robinson in a bid to find potential solutions.
“Hopefully, we will make the transition from a fossil fuel-driven economy to a more circular one in the next three or four years – otherwise I don’t know what to tell my children.”
