When Ajax played Rangers recently, I noticed the club badge featured a character – who is it, please? – G

Commissioned by then manager Louis van Gaal, in the 1990s, the badge features mythological Greek hero, Ajax.

The club were founded in 1900 and named after Ajax, who fought in the Trojan Wars.

Did the survivors of the Titanic sinking get any compensation? – B

When the Titanic sank on her maiden voyage, on the morning of April 15, 1912, just 712 people of the 2,208 on board survived.

A distress signal was picked up by the RMS Carpathia, 58 nautical miles away, and she steamed, directly to the area and picked up the survivors.

After the tragedy, survivors had to sue the Titanic’s owners, the White Star Line, in an attempt to be compensated. They settled for a total of $664,000, the equivalent today of approximately $22,000 (£18,500).

Sadly, the Carpathia was sunk by a German U-boat during the First World War, with the loss of five lives.

Is it true that, alongside TV, the phone and radar, disposable nappies were invented by a Scot? – K

Valerie Hunter Gordon was born in Derbyshire, but moved to Scotland, living in Beauly until her death in 2016.

In 1947, after the birth of her third child, and not keen on using traditional nappies, she invented a two-part disposable version. “I just didn’t want to wash them,” she once said. “You had to iron them as well. It was awful labour.”
