Motorist bows to pier pressure
The front page carried a remarkable photograph alongside its report of the storms that were lashing the country.
The photograph shows a car parked at the end of the pier in Helensburgh as waves battered the sea wall and threatened to overwhelm both the pier and the vehicle.
The Post headline read: “What A Place to Park A Car! At the end of a pier. In a 70mph gale. And with giant waves drenching it with spray. The place was Helensburgh yesterday. The driver eventually braved the breakers and drove to a safer spot.”
Despite this stormy November, there was little snow throughout much of the UK in 1973 before a heavy snowfall in 1976 caused widespread disruption to large parts of the country.
