Hawick display title credentials in demolition

- By David Barnes sport@sundaypost.com

Hawick underlined their credentials as the dominant side in this season’s Premiership with a 41-0 demolition of third-in-the-table Edinburgh Accies at Mansfield Park yesterday.

The Borderers scored seven tries through Gareth Welsh (2), a penalty try, Jae Linton, Ronan McKean, Calum Renwick and Kyle Brunton, while Kirk Ford kicked two conversions.

“That was the full 80-minute performance we’ve been looking for,” said victorious head coach Matty Douglas.

“Our attack was good, but I thought we built this win on defence – the effort that went into all the tackles was impressive.”

Accies head coach Iain Berthinussen stressed that the absence of a few leading players was no excuse for his team’s dismal showing.

“The guys didn’t really get off the bus today,” he said.

“We probably got bullied off the ball a bit. They got a couple of quick scores. We were 19-0 down at half time and thereafter we never really changed what we were doing.

“We just need to do a lot of hard work and have a good reflection. We had a good home win over second-in-the-table Currie last week, but we’ve got to be able to win away from Raeburn Place.”

Hawick have now won 12 games on the bounce after drawing with Selkirk on the opening day of the season.

Meanwhile, bottom-of-the-table Musselburgh caused a huge upset by beating fourth-placed Selkirk 32-20 at Philiphaugh, picking up the bonus point through tries for Craig Owenson, James Ferguson, Neil McNairn and Finlay Duraj.

Currie Chieftains recovered from their loss to Accies last weekend to edge past plucky Heriot’s Blues, with Ryan Southern, Ryan Stewart, Iain Sim, Cairn Ramsay, Adam Hall and Cammy Meager all dotting down for the Malleny Park men in a 37-32 win.

Heriot’s picked up two bonus-points from finishing within seven points of their opponents and for claiming four tries. Their scorers were Noah Henry (2), Iain Kay, Craig Robertson and Ross Thomson.

Jed-Forest fought back from 13-pioints down with 10 minutes to go to claim a dramatic 33-32 win over Glasgow Hawks at Balgray, and Marr beat GHA 36-15 at Fullarton Park.
