Restaurant of the week
Topolabamba
Location
In the heart of the city, Topolabamba is the type of place you might choose as a lastminute dinner option during a night out... and you’d be glad you did.
First impressions
The restaurant is alive with atmosphere when we visit on a busy Saturday night. Its Mexican-themed decor is at once moody and interesting, with day of the dead skulls and neon cactus dotted around between the exposed brickwork walls and wooden tables.
Service
We were shown to a tiny, two-person table near the door, which was a relief because we hadn’t booked. The service was prompt and helpful for Mexican street food novices like us.
Menu
The idea is authentic Mexican street food that is designed to be shared. They staff recommend three-tofour dishes per person from an extensive menu.
Taste
We ordered a mix of tacos (filled corn tortillas), quesadillas (toasted tortillas stuffed with filling), and tostadas (crispy corn tortillas). The taste was undeniable, with the Carne Asada Steak taco, I was immediately transported to Mexico, fresh chillies and slowcooked steak along with a generous dollop of the lime-drizzled avocado side. It was amazing. Another stand-out was the homemade artisan style jack cheese fondue, which was perfect for dipping with tortilla chips.
Ambience
The party atmosphere from the streets of Glasgow was continuing inside as everyone in Topolabamba was having an amazing time.
Value
Dinner for two, including some incredible margaritas, came in around £60. Quite expensive but for a unique taste experience, it was well worth it.
