Montgomery: We could have scored seven

- By Fraser Mackie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Nick Montgomery believes Hibs could’ve scored at least seven against St Johnstone in a blistering start to their bottom-six campaign.

Hibs were hurting after one point from nine – including a 2-1 defeat to Saints – saw them stop short of the top half.

But the Easter Road boss reckons Dimitar Mitov’s goalkeeping spared Saints from a thrashing.

He said: “I thought the performance was good and the result was what we deserved. That’s not always been the case this season. We’ve dominated so many games on stats and possession but they don’t win you games.

“Putting the ball in the back of the net and being clinical in those moments does.

“But, if we’re honest, we weren’t as clinical as we should’ve been because we could’ve scored another four goals – minimum – but their goalkeeper pulled off some great saves.

“A couple of weeks ago at Easter Road it was a really deflating, disappointing result. We totally dominated that match but their keeper pulled off four or five great saves.

“What might’ve been, could’ve been, doesn’t matter now. What does is that we came here, showed good character and the boys put in a good performance.”

Saints boss Craig Levein admitted his team are toiling to recover from their errors. He said: “If we make a couple of mistakes, that leads to other mistakes. We don’t seem to be able to reverse out of the situation, calm things down and pull ourselves together.

“Other than Adama Sibideh’s chance, we didn’t do a lot. It’s difficult to get confidence back when it’s mistake after mistake.”

Sidibeh had an injured ankle in a boot after the match, and Levein said: “I think he rolled it and there must be some degree of discomfort or pain.”

But there was a sense of relief as Levein noted Ross County’s loss to Livingston.

But his men must be better at Aberdeen if they are to increase the onepoint advantage over County in the race to avoid the relegation play-off places.

He said: “It’s the inconsistency. I don’t know if we’re going to turn up and perform at a good level – or make poor decisions and execute things poorly.”
