Watt: United can ‘Do a Dee’ and take top-six slot

Tony Watt reckons Premiership-bound Dundee United can copy the example of city rivals Dundee – and take the top-flight by storm.

Watt is relishing the prospect of the triumphant Tangerines returning to the top tier of Scottish Football after Friday night’s goalless draw at Airdrie secured the Championship title for Jim Goodwin’s side.

Tony Docherty’s Dark Blues have exceeded expectations by clinching a top-six slot as the newly-promoted side and former Celtic striker Watt insists there’s no reason United can’t make such a similar impact on the big stage next season.

Watt said: “Why not? Fair play to Dundee. A few of my mates play there like big Trevor Carson and Ricky Lammie.

“They have done really well and deserve to be where they are.

“Look, our aim is just to go up and do well and make our fans proud.

“Hopefully this season gives us momentum for them to jump on the back of us.

“I’ve been in Europe with the club before but things just didn’t work out.

“It was exciting, and I have seen how much of a buzz there can be about the place.

“I think the board and people above us will put the foundations in place to make sure the club doesn’t go the same way as it did last time which was to go back down.”

Watt, who wore the captain’s armband in the absence of skipper Ross Docherty on Friday, expressed his delight for gaffer Goodwin and cited him as the reason he returned to the Tannadice club.

Watt said: “Jim Goodwin is a very good guy, first and foremost. So I’m thrilled for him.

“He’s a really astute manager. I’ve said all along I like his tactics and I like the way he works.

“I remember the first conversation I ever had with him. That was enough for me and I knew that I wanted to work for him.”

Watt, 30, will now take a well-earned rest and insists lifting the title has been a monumental effort.

He said: “I want to see how I can improve myself and get back to the top league and do well for this club.

“It’s a big summer. It’s not going to be all rest, probably half and half.

“But I need a couple of weeks just to switch off and enjoy it with my wife.

“It’s been a really demanding season. I never really had a great pre-season because of my ankle injury.

“So it will be good just to get the feet up and sleep for a wee bit and just enjoy.

“We’ve given a lot to win this league. It’s a collective effort and that’s what made it all the more sweet.”
