Good news – Goodwin (and United) are back at the top

-

Dundee United’s promotion back to the SPFL Premiership is great news for Scottish football.

In the top flight, you want to have as many top games as possible and having them back will add to it all.

For a start, there will be the four Tayside derbies back on the agenda and that is great.

On top of that, United are a well supported football club and their fans are very loyal.

They follow the team, home and away, in great numbers and they deserve to be back in the top flight.

Plenty of credit is due to Jim Goodwin and his staff for this achievement.

They had to ride through some tough times, on and off the park, and they are entitled to feel very proud.

I knew Jim when he was a young lad at Celtic and he went on to have a fine career as a player at clubs such as Scunthorpe and St Mirren.

He was an out-and-out winner and took that attitude into management.

It served him well at Alloa Athletic in part-time surroundings and he found himself back in Paisley as manager of the Buddies.

He was very good at Saints and Aberdeen came calling for him to replace Stephen Glass.

It didn’t go to plan at the Dons and he was out of that job within a year.

I felt then that the decision by the Aberdeen hierarchy was harsh. He should have been given more time.

But their loss was United’s gain. He took over at Tannadice and showed the mental strength to stay on and fight after relegation last season.

He will now be looking to improve his squad and it will be interesting to see the funds he is given to do so by the Tannadice chiefs.

They only need to look across the city to see how it can be done after Dundee’s excellent campaign.

Top six is achievable and Jim will be setting his sights high, I’m sure.
