Lightning put paid to play in China

-

Yesterday’s third round of the Volvo China Open was cancelled due to thunder and lightning.

Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg held a three-shot advantage over Englishman Paul Waring at 16-under-par after the second round, but the leader did not hit a single shot yesterday at Hidden Grace Golf Club.

Only two groups got under way before play was initially suspended at 8.18am local time due to the dangerous situation caused by lightning in the Shenzhen area.

The weather did not improve and it was announced at 2.11pm that the third round had been cancelled.

The event will now be a 54-hole tournament, with this morning’s final round being played in a two-tee, three-ball format.

■ English teenager Kris Kim became the youngest player to make the cut on the PGA Tour in 11 years after a birdie at the last saw him get through to the weekend of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas with a shot to spare.

Kim, the son of former LPGA player Ji-Hyun Suh, carded a second-round fourunder-par 67, which included a run of five birdies and one bogey over his front nine.

At 16 years and seven months he became the youngest player to make the cut on tour since 14-year-old Guan Tianlang at the 2013 Masters, and, according to the PGA Tour, the fifth youngest in history.

Of his final-hole birdie, Kim said: “To be honest it being a par five it’s pretty helpful but yeah, there is always going to be nerves when you’re on the cut line.”
