Arsenal man marking

- By James Ducker at Old Trafford

Petr Cech

The Czech stood firm when called upon, pushing aside one shot from Mata and tipping another from Martial over the bar. Played a crucial role.

7

Carl Jenkinson

Equipped himself relatively well but Héctor Bellerin’s absence was always in danger of being keenly felt, and Arsenal missed his pace and penetration down the flank.

6

Shkodran Mustafi

Guilty of diving in at the feet of Mata and was relieved to see Cech keep out the subsequent shot. Gave the ball away a little too often.

6

Laurent Koscielny

Sometimes guilty of overplaying at the back but he was one of Arsenal’s better performers and stood tall when it counted together with Cech.

7

Nacho Monreal

The left-back was left flapping on several occasions in the first half against Valencia and should have done more to exert pressure on Pogba in the buildup to United’s goal.

5

Francis Coquelin

Had his hands full dealing with Pogba and, despite making a couple of important last-ditch tackles, Arsenal’s midfield struggled to match their opponents.

6

Mohamed Elneny

Another surprise starter, he never really made an impact on the game and found himself getting pegged back more and more in the second half.

5

Theo Walcott

Started brightly enough and drew an early booking for Darmian but he did not get forward as much as he would have liked and was often preoccupied with defensive responsibilities.

6

Mesut Özil

A great disappearing act from the German playmaker. So anonymous it was easy to forget he was playing. Arsenal fans are right to expect so much better than this.

4

Aaron Ramsey

A surprise selection on the left flank over Alex Iwobi, who was sorely missed, and the Welshman did nothing to justify his inclusion. Woeful performance.

4

Alexis Sánchez

Might have done better with a header early on that he tried to direct to Ramsey. Better in the initial stages but rarely got into dangerous positions and faded as the game proceeded.

6

Subs Giroud for Elneny (73) 7; Xhaka for Coquelin (80) 6;

OxladeChamberlain for Jenkinson (84) 7. Not used: Gibbs, Gabriel, Ospina (g), Iwobi. Booked: Xhaka, Ramsey, Sánchez.
