Saracens man marking

- By Daniel Schofield

Alex Goode Full-back

Rugby’s Glenn Hoddle. Sublime grubber kick to set up Ashton, at the heart of the second try and scored the all-important third. 9

Mako Vunipola Prop

Has redefined the standards for a prop’s workrate. Turns up in virtually every other phase of play. Did suffer against Zirakashvili up front. 7

Chris Ashton Wing

Overtook Vincent Clerc as the competition’s record-try scorer with Saracens’ first try in a European final. Will be sorely missed by English rugby. 7

Jamie George Hooker

Line-out work was exemplary and was among his team’s leading tacklers when he was withdrawn for Schalk Brits. Made one break. 7

Marcelo Bosch Centre

Sliced through Rougerie early on. Most of his work was in a defensive capacity, making some great reads to stamp out a few fires. 7

Vincent Koch Prop

The South African may rank as the signing of the season. Scrummages like the Springbok greats and his blond mop appeared all over the pitch. 7

Brad Barritt (capt) Centre

In the wars early on and was caked in blood by the end. No one matched the Saracens captain’s effort. Consistently got Saracens into the right areas. 8

Maro Itoje Second row

Man of the match in the final victory against Racing last year but less conspicuous this time around. Not quite influencing games in the manner he was. 6

Chris Wyles Wing

Another whose talents are undervalued away from Allianz Park. Broke through a couple of tackles but his greatest value is his near absence of errors. 7

George Kruis Second row

After his horror drop against Munster in the semi-final was not going to make the same mistake again from close range. Excellent work at the line-out. 8

Owen Farrell Fly-half

The timing of his passing is as good as any All Black. A couple of missed kicks at goal but converted the one that mattered with six minutes to go. 8

Michael Rhodes Flanker

Normally thrives in the shadows but struggled at times to stem Clermont’s work at the breakdown. One of Saracens’ players of the season. 6

Richard Wigglesworth Scrum-half

The heartbeat of Saracens’ effort. Fewer kicks than normal, but all of those were on the money. Kept the attack ticking over and never any panic. 7

Jackson Wray Flanker

Grafts, grafts and then grafts some more. Sacrificed for Schalk Burger in an attempt to gain parity at the breakdown. 6

Replacements

Schalk Brits for George 50, Titi Lamositele for M Vunopola 76, Petrus du Plessis for Koch 78, Jim Hamilton for Itoje 78, Schalk Burger for Wray 60, Ben Spencer for Wigglesworth 78. Not used Alex Lozowski Duncan Taylor

Billy Vunipola No8

Priceless ability to put Saracens on the front foot whether exploding off the back of scrums or fielding high balls. Made a game high 20 carries. 9
